Health nz Substation 6

The MDHB Substation 6 project comprised the construction of a resilient, purpose-built substation and generation facility within the Palmerston North Hospital grounds. Featuring a rectangular form and simple mono-pitch roof, the building provides a functional, low-risk solution that integrates seamlessly with the existing hospital environment.

The scope included civil works, building services, HV and LV system design and installation, standby power systems, and comprehensive controls integration. Delivered within a live hospital environment, the project required exceptional coordination and strict adherence to quality, safety, and environmental standards.

Through rigorous quality control and close collaboration with civil, electrical, and communications contractors, the project achieved seamless integration with the hospital’s infrastructure. Robust health and safety management was applied throughout, ensuring the protection of patients, staff, and contractors.

Situated on the former hospital museum site and directly opposite the New Acute Mental Health Building, Substation 6 now forms a critical component of the hospital’s infrastructure upgrades—enhancing the MidCentral District Health Board’s capacity to provide secure, resilient, and compliant electrical supply for essential healthcare operations.
