Toyota NZ Warehouse Extension

Colspec were engaged to construct a Warehouse Extension for Toyota New Zealand, Palmerston North. This project involved a 10,000m² warehouse extension including 750m² of new offices and amenities, alongside a 9,500m² concrete hardstand development.

We were the main contractor for the project, and undertook the construction of the warehouse extension, which was a superstructure consisting of structural steel portal framing, concrete foundations and floors, and metal roofing and cladding. Additionally, we oversaw the installation of a 438KL water-harvesting tank for fire protection/sprinkler systems. Subcontractor management was key to the success of this project, with 37 different companies working under Colspec to achieve a successful result.

As this project was undertaken during the winter months, the weather caused significant delays to works. This meant that the original design of the concrete hardstand was unable to be delivered in the timeframe agreed to in the contract. Instead of submitting for an extension of time, Colspec worked on a solution, suggesting the addition of a stabilisation agent to the concrete to reduce curing times. Colspec were involved in the overall redesign of the concrete hardstand, which allowed the works to continue during the winter months and ensured the project kept to the original construction programme.

The Toyota Warehouse Extension was a successful project for Colspec with the warehouse and offices being delivered within the tight 7-month construction timeframe. Although this was our first project for Toyota, our expertise shone through and we were secured for a second project to seismically upgrade the same remaining warehouse structure.
