Massey - School of Aviation

The School of Aviation was constructed at the Palmerston North Airport (PNAL). The project was completed for Massey University and the PNAL, both clients we have completed multiple major projects for and always enjoy working with.

A 2 stage project, with a new structure built for the school to move into (Stage 1), while their old building was demolished and replaced (Stage 2).

Structurally, the building has been designed and built to represent the wings of a plane, with the main entrance in the centre the fuselage. Alucobond cladding was installed on both the exterior and interior as a feature product, creating points of visual difference. Kingspan insulated wall panelling was chosen and installed to the majority of the exterior to create a slick finished product reminiscent of commonly seen plan hangars. This finish allowed for the school to have a uniform look and feel, enticing building users with the feeling of aviation as they enter.

Feature wall panelling to the interior entranceway was completed with Décortech Firesafe MDF panels. These were installed by our own carpenters and apprentices defect free with, creating a warmer interior entrance way. A special area of this build was the purpose built simulator rooms completed with entirely black finishing. This created the required space for the flight simulators to function correctly, a key part of the Aviation School’s program.

The standout features of this building include:

  • Alucobond exterior cladding and feature interior panelling

  • Kingspan insulated exterior panels

  • Décortech MDF panelling to entrance foyer

  • Custom designed and built simulator room

This project was opened by Transport Minister Phil Twyford and is a key structure serving the further tertiary education of New Zealanders.
