Post tender at a meeting between client, consultant and main contractor, we propose a programme for the work, taking into account the needs and requirements of the client, timeframes and materials or subcontract item supply. This computer-generated programme is prepared by our contract manager and our site foreman for the contract. Ownership of decisions is important in our approach to all of our contracts.

On commencement of work, Colspec has a site foreman on site at all times who works closely with his team and is responsible for purchasing materials for the site and co-ordinating the subcontractors. The project managers supervise our foremen and are under the wing of our General Manager, Steve Hirst.

Personnel, programme variations and contract queries are their key responsibilities. At the office, Steve Hirst and Nicholas Chapple, while managing the business, provide any costings and further backup as required. Both men visit each site regularly to monitor progress.

Office staff, dedicated to providing the necessary information required to run the business, monitor all purchases, wages, overheads and accounting work.

Communication is also important in our business. All foremen and key personnel have mobile phones. These are necessary to enable people to be contacted at any time. They also have faxes at home for ordering materials, etc at night well in advance of when they are required. Any correspondence received at our office is dated and distributed immediately on its arrival including a copy of the foreman's fax. Variations are costed as soon as the necessary information/costs are returned to our office.

Job instructions and job queries are issued in writing in triplicate so everyone is informed. On site vehicles are available at all times. The carpenters are all waged and employed directly by Colspec. This provides the company with control necessary in relation to personnel. All site crew are trades people apart from the apprentices in training. Colspec has invested a lot of capital into its plant, right up to running its own excavators, loaders and trucks.
