    Project Experience

While Colspec Construction is not regarded as large, it is proud of its efforts and has proved that it is capable of completing works of a reasonable size. To see examples of our work, click on the links below.

Courtesy Ford ($2m)

A design/ build project, Courtesy Ford's new flagship building features a car dealership yard, showroom, and office warehouse. Included in the work was a hard-standing car park and show area, glass frontage with the curved facia line carried on in the curved glass, and extensive framing. One of the design briefs for this building was to create a space Courtesy Ford could use as their flagship complex for this region, showcasing their range of vehicles while upholding and extending their corporate image. The resulting building, without impacting on the skyline, stands out in a street dotted with big-name brands.

Awapuni Recycling Centre

The Awapuni Recycling Centre is more than a standard recycling centre - even the building itself features environmentally conscious elements. Recycling, energy efficiency, and future proofing are present in features that are not immediately obvious. As may be expected, the office is double glazed, there are thick batts in the walls and ceiling, rooms are sound-proofed, and the water is heated by solar power. In addition to this, the building itself is on a raft floor, not only to provide extra insulation, but also to accommodate the unstable ground on which it is built. But perhaps the biggest nod to the building’s function and location is its clever use of methane gas from the landfill on which it is built. Taking the recycling process one step further, this gas is converted into energy, which is used to power the entire building.

The raft floor and use of methane gas aren’t the only features of the building that indicate a lot of thought was put into its location. Being in a high wind zone, the office was constructed with a rigid air barrier, with Titan boarding over the top and horizontal corrugated iron over cavity batten. Added to this, the joint free/ crack free slab, which is over the gas manifold system works to avoid any gas build-ups breaking up the slab.

This project provided Colspec with some new and exciting building challenges and resulted in a complex that is at the forefront of environmental innovations.

Bunnings Warehouse ($8m)

This project involved building the largest of the Bunning’s Warehouses used in New Zealand. Extensive site works were necessary, including the piping of a stream that ran through the property and excavation work including demolition of the existing buildings on site. Works included structural steel, concrete pads, pre-cast concrete panels and timber construction. The building space totalled approximately 10,000m2. This project had its deadline brought forward by three weeks and, despite adverse weather conditions, with good management and team work, Colspec met the new deadline.

Highlights of the Officer’s Mess project include pre-cast coloured concrete, polished concrete, laminated beams, coloured block-work, and ground block-work. The facility was opened by the then Governor General, Dame Silvia Cartwright.

Massey University Registry ($1.7m)

The Massey University Registry refurbishment involved significant alterations while the building was still occupied. For minimal disruption to those using the building, the work was undertaken in two phases, allowing for occupancy of the first stage prior to commencement of work on the second. With not just the Colspec team and sub-contractors to manage, but also the movements of the client’s surrounding workforce and students, this project required precise organisation and effective communication. Again, despite the complexities of this project (including specialist joinery and new plumbing, drainage, and electrical services to be fitted in a small area), work was completed on time.

Carlton / Novotel ($2.5m)

Colspec recently completed work on the refurbishment of the Carlton Hotel. The project involved a cafe bar, restaurant bar, conference rooms and a fitout of two levels of accomodation containing 16 rooms each. This project required a large number of workers to be in the same area and this was well managed by the project manager and site foremen.
